Ali Hazelwood is the pen name of an Italian romance novelist and former neuroscience professor who lives in the United States. Her debut, “The Love Hypothesis” (2021), was a New York Times bestseller, and many of her books centre on women working in science and academia.
Hazelwood was born and raised in Italy and lived in Japan and Germany before moving to the United States for a PhD in neuroscience. According to her website she then worked as a professor for about three years, leaving academia in 2022 to write full time.
“The Love Hypothesis” began as Star Wars fan fiction about Rey and Kylo Ren, which she posted on Archive of Our Own in 2018. A literary agent approached her about the story in 2020 and helped her prepare it for publication, and Berkley released it in September 2021. The novel follows a PhD candidate and a professor at Stanford who pretend to be in a relationship, and it spent more than 40 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. A film version with Lili Reinhart and Tom Bateman was released on Prime Video on 23 September 2026.
In 2022 she published “Love on the Brain” and three novellas, “Under One Roof”, “Stuck with You” and “Below Zero”, later collected as “Loathe to Love You”. “Love, Theoretically” and her first young adult novel, “Check & Mate”, followed in 2023. She moved into paranormal romance with “Bride” (2024), which the New York Public Library named among its best books for adults that year, and with “Mate” (2025). “Not in Love” (2024) has a spin-off, “Problematic Summer Romance” (2025), and “Deep End” also appeared in 2025.
“Two Can Play”, first released as an audio novella in 2024, came out in print in February 2026. The paranormal novellas “Bound” and “Unbound” were published together in one volume in October 2026. Berkley has scheduled “The Two-Body Problem”, a sequel to “The Love Hypothesis” that returns to Olive and Adam, for 2 February 2027.
