About Robert Silverberg
Robert Silverberg is an American science fiction author and editor, a multiple winner of the Hugo and Nebula awards and an SFWA Grand Master. His best-known books include “Dying Inside”, “Downward to the Earth”, the novella “Nightwings” and “Lord Valentine’s Castle”, the first of the Majipoor series.
Silverberg was born in Brooklyn, New York, on 15 January 1935 and began submitting stories to science fiction magazines in his early teens. He took a BA in English literature at Columbia University in 1956. While still a student he wrote the juvenile novel “Revolt on Alpha C” (1955), and in 1956 he won a Hugo as best new writer. For the next few years he wrote, by his own count, a million words a year for magazines and paperback houses, under his own name and many pseudonyms and often in collaboration with Randall Garrett.
When the magazine market slumped in 1959 he turned to other fields, including a long list of non-fiction books on history and archaeology. He came back to science fiction in the mid-1960s with more ambitious work, encouraged by the editor Frederik Pohl. “Thorns” and “The Masks of Time” were followed by “Nightwings”, which won the Hugo for best novella in 1969, and by “Downward to the Earth”, “The World Inside”, “The Book of Skulls” and “Dying Inside”, the story of a telepath losing his powers. “A Time of Changes” won the Nebula Award for best novel.
He moved from New York to the West Coast in 1972 and announced his retirement from writing in 1975. He returned in 1980 with “Lord Valentine’s Castle”, set on Majipoor, a planet far larger than Earth that is shared by humans and several other species. It won the Locus Award for best fantasy novel, and the series grew to six novels and two story collections, ending with “Tales of Majipoor” in 2013. Later novels include “Gilgamesh the King”, “The Face of the Waters”, “The Alien Years” and “Roma Eterna”, and he expanded three Isaac Asimov stories into novels, beginning with “Nightfall”.
Silverberg won further Nebula and Hugo awards for novellas such as “Born with the Dead”, “Sailing to Byzantium” and “Gilgamesh in the Outback”. He was inducted into the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame in 1999. He is married to the writer Karen Haber and lives in the San Francisco Bay Area. He said in 2015 that he did not intend to write more fiction, though collections of his stories continue to appear.
