About Charlaine Harris
Charlaine Harris is an American author of mysteries and urban fantasy, best known for the Sookie Stackhouse novels (also called The Southern Vampire Mysteries), which HBO adapted as the television series “True Blood”. Her other series include the Aurora Teagarden, Lily Bard, Harper Connelly, Midnight, Texas and Gunnie Rose books.
Harris was born on 25 November 1951 and grew up in Tunica, in the Mississippi Delta. She began writing plays while a student at Rhodes College in Memphis before turning to crime fiction with two standalone mysteries, “Sweet and Deadly” (1981) and “A Secret Rage” (1984). Her first series began with “Real Murders” (1990), an Agatha Award nominee, in which the Georgia librarian Aurora Teagarden belongs to a club of true crime enthusiasts. After a long gap she returned to the character with two further novels in 2016 and 2017, and Hallmark Movies & Mysteries has filmed the books with Candace Cameron Bure in the title role.
The Lily Bard series, about a cleaning lady turned detective in rural Arkansas, ran for five books from 1996 to 2001. “Dead Until Dark” (2001) then introduced Sookie Stackhouse, a telepathic waitress in a northern Louisiana bar whose cases involve vampires, werewolves and other supernatural creatures. It won the Anthony Award for Best Paperback Mystery, and the series ran to thirteen novels, ending with “Dead Ever After” in 2013, with the supplementary “After Dead” published later that year. “True Blood” ran for seven seasons from 2008 to 2014.
The four Harper Connelly novels (2005 to 2009) follow a young woman who, after being struck by lightning, can locate dead bodies and see their final moments. The Midnight, Texas trilogy (2014 to 2016) is set in a small, nearly deserted town whose residents include a psychic and a vampire; NBC broadcast a television version for two seasons from 2017. With Christopher Golden she also wrote the Cemetery Girl graphic novels.
Her Gunnie Rose series, which began with “An Easy Death” in 2018, takes place in an alternate history in which the United States has broken into several countries, and follows the young gunslinger Lizbeth Rose. The sixth book, “The Last Wizards’ Ball”, appeared in 2025. “Hold My Spellbook”, the first book in a new fantasy series called The Stronghold, is announced for 2027. Harris lives in Texas.
