About Alice Hoffman

Alice Hoffman is an American novelist, born in New York City on 16 March 1952 and raised on Long Island. She has written more than thirty novels, along with books for young adults and children, and is best known for “Practical Magic” (1995), which was filmed in 1998 with Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman. Many of her books fall within magic realism.

Hoffman took a BA at Adelphi University and was a Mirrielees Fellow at the Stanford University Creative Writing Center in 1973 and 1974, where she earned an MA. After her first short story appeared in the magazine Fiction, the editor Ted Solotaroff asked whether she had a novel, and she began writing “Property Of”. It was published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux in 1977.

“At Risk” (1988) concerns a family dealing with AIDS, and “Turtle Moon” won the Hammett Prize. “Here on Earth” (1997), an Oprah’s Book Club choice, reworks themes from Emily Bronte’s “Wuthering Heights”. “The Dovekeepers” (2011) is a fictional account of the siege of Masada and was adapted as a two-part television drama in 2015. She also wrote the screenplay for the 1983 film “Independence Day”.

The Practical Magic books centre on the Owens family, whose women have been blamed for more than 200 years for everything that goes wrong in their Massachusetts town. “The Rules of Magic” (2017) is a prequel set in the 1960s, and “Magic Lessons” (2020) goes back to the seventeenth century and the family matriarch, Maria Owens. “The Book of Magic” (2021) is the basis for the film “Practical Magic 2”, released in September 2026.

Her books for younger readers include “Aquamarine”, filmed in 2006, “Green Angel” and its sequel “Green Witch”. “When We Flew Away” (2024), about Anne Frank’s life before her family went into hiding, was published in cooperation with the Anne Frank House. “The Witches of Cambridge”, published on 8 September 2026, opens a new series about a secret society of witches at Radcliffe in 1950s Cambridge, Massachusetts. Hoffman lives near Boston, where she helped establish the Hoffman Breast Center at Mount Auburn Hospital after being treated there for breast cancer.
