About Gary Paulsen
Gary Paulsen (1939 to 2021) was an American writer of children’s and young adult fiction, best known for coming-of-age stories set in the wilderness. He wrote more than 200 books, among them the survival novel “Hatchet” (1987), and won the American Library Association’s Margaret Edwards Award in 1997 for his contribution to writing for teenagers.
Paulsen was born in Minneapolis. His father was a career army officer who left soon after the birth, and Paulsen did not see him again until he was seven, when he and his mother sailed to join him in the Philippines. He later wrote about those years in the memoir “Eastern Sun, Winter Moon”, and about a Minnesota adolescence spent working as a farmhand, setting pins in a bowling alley and hunting for food in “Guts”. He graduated from high school in Thief River Falls, dropped out of Bemidji State University and served in the US Army from 1959 to 1962, reaching the rank of sergeant.
“Hatchet” follows Brian Robeson, a 13-year-old flying to visit his father in northern Canada when the pilot dies of a heart attack. Brian crash-lands in a lake and has to survive alone for 54 days with little more than the hatchet his mother gave him. The book was a Newbery Honor title in 1988 and was filmed as “A Cry in the Wild” in 1990. Paulsen returned to Brian in four more novels, ending with “Brian’s Hunt” in 2003.
Two other novels, “Dogsong” and “The Winter Room”, were also Newbery runners-up. His other series include the Mr. Tucket westerns, begun in 1969, the Culpepper Adventures and World of Adventure books for younger readers, and the Murphy westerns for adults. “Nightjohn” (1993), a novel about slavery in the American South before the Civil War, was made into a film in 1996 and followed by a sequel, “Sarny”.
Paulsen ran the Iditarod sled dog race in Alaska in 1983, finishing 41st, and drew on it for “Woodsong” and “Winterdance”. Heart disease made him give up dog sledding in 1990, and he spent more than a decade sailing the Pacific before returning to it. He married the illustrator Ruth Wright in 1971 and lived for many years in New Mexico.
He died at his home in Tularosa, New Mexico, on 13 October 2021, aged 82. The memoir “Gone to the Woods” and the novel “How to Train Your Dad” appeared that year, and a final novel, “Northwind”, was published in 2022.
