About Harry Turtledove
Harry Turtledove is an American novelist, born in Los Angeles in 1949, who is best known for alternate history. A trained historian with a doctorate in Byzantine history, he has also written fantasy, science fiction and historical fiction, including the eleven-volume Southern Victory series and the Worldwar books. Publishers Weekly called him “The Master of Alternate History”.
Turtledove grew up in Gardena, California. He dropped out of the California Institute of Technology in his first year and went on to the University of California, Los Angeles, where he received a PhD in Byzantine history in 1977. His first two novels, “Wereblood” and “Werenight”, appeared in 1979 under the name Eric G. Iverson, because his editor doubted that readers would believe Turtledove was a real surname. He worked as a technical writer for the Los Angeles County Office of Education during the 1980s and has written full time since 1991.
His academic field shaped the early fantasy. The Videssos books are set in a world modelled on the Byzantine Empire, beginning with a Roman legion transported there in “The Misplaced Legion” (1987). His breakthrough in alternate history was “The Guns of the South” (1992), in which time-travelling Afrikaner extremists supply Robert E. Lee’s army with AK-47s. It won the John Esten Cooke Award for Southern Fiction.
The Worldwar series has aliens invading Earth in the middle of the Second World War, and the Colonization trilogy and “Homeward Bound” continue that story a generation later. Southern Victory, which starts with “How Few Remain” (1997), imagines a Confederacy that won its independence and follows the two rival American nations into the 1940s. Other series include The War That Came Early, the Darkness fantasy novels, and the Crosstime Traffic books for young adults.
Turtledove won the Hugo Award for best novella in 1994 for “Down in the Bottomlands”. “How Few Remain” and “Ruled Britannia” both won the Sidewise Award for Alternate History, and “The Gladiator” was a co-winner of the 2008 Prometheus Award. He has used the pen names H. N. Turteltaub, for historical novels such as the Hellenic Traders series, and Dan Chernenko, for the Scepter of Mercy trilogy. “The Two Georges” was written with the actor Richard Dreyfuss and “Household Gods” with Judith Tarr.
He is married to the mystery writer Laura Frankos and lives in Southern California. Recent books include “Powerless” (2025), set in a socialist California, and the City of Shadows novels “Twice as Dead” and “Lightning Runes”.
