About John Green
John Green (born 1977) is an American author and YouTuber whose young adult novels include “Looking for Alaska”, “Paper Towns” and “The Fault in Our Stars”. His books have more than 50 million copies in print worldwide. His most recent novel, “Hollywood, Ending”, published in September 2026, is his first written for adults.
Green was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, grew up mainly in Orlando, Florida, and attended Indian Springs School, a boarding school outside Birmingham, Alabama. He graduated from Kenyon College in 2000 with a double major in English and religious studies. He then spent about six months as a student chaplain at a children’s hospital, intending to become an Episcopal priest, before changing course and taking a job at the book review journal Booklist in Chicago.
He wrote his first novel while working there. “Looking for Alaska” (2005), a boarding school story drawing on his time at Indian Springs, won the 2006 Michael L. Printz Award. “An Abundance of Katherines” followed in 2006, and “Paper Towns” (2008) won the 2009 Edgar Award for Best Young Adult Novel. He also co-wrote “Let It Snow: Three Holiday Romances” (2008) with Maureen Johnson and Lauren Myracle and “Will Grayson, Will Grayson” (2010) with David Levithan. In 2007 he and his brother Hank launched the Vlogbrothers YouTube channel, and the two later created the educational channel Crash Course.
“The Fault in Our Stars” (2012), about two teenagers with cancer who fall in love, drew on his time as a hospital chaplain and his friendship with Esther Earl. It debuted at number one on The New York Times Best Seller list for children’s chapter books and stayed there for 43 weeks. The 2014 film starred Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort and took over 307 million dollars worldwide. “Paper Towns” was filmed in 2015, “Looking for Alaska” became a Hulu miniseries in 2019, “Let It Snow” a Netflix film the same year, and “Turtles All the Way Down” a film released on Max in 2024.
“Turtles All the Way Down” (2017), about a teenager with obsessive-compulsive disorder, was his first attempt to write directly about the mental illness he has lived with since childhood. He then turned to non-fiction with “The Anthropocene Reviewed” (2021), adapted from his podcast, and “Everything Is Tuberculosis” (2025), which grew out of his global health advocacy. “Hollywood, Ending”, published by Dutton on 22 September 2026, follows two young actors cast in a biopic about Andy Warhol.
