About Lauren Groff

Lauren Groff (born 1978) is an American novelist and short story writer, the author of five novels and three story collections. She is best known for “Fates and Furies” (2015), “Matrix” (2021) and the collection “Florida” (2018), and has been a finalist for the National Book Award three times.

Groff was born and raised in Cooperstown, New York. She studied English and French at Amherst College, where she rowed, and took a Master of Fine Arts in fiction at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She lives in Gainesville, Florida, with her husband, Clay Kallman, and their two children. Her sister is the Olympic triathlete Sarah True.

Her first novel, “The Monsters of Templeton” (2008), is set in a fictionalised Cooperstown and mixes a contemporary homecoming story with voices from the town’s past. It entered the New York Times bestseller list and was shortlisted for the Orange Prize for New Writers. A story collection, “Delicate Edible Birds”, followed in 2009, and a second novel, “Arcadia” (2012), tells the story of the first child born in a 1960s commune in upstate New York.

“Fates and Furies” is a portrait of a 24-year marriage told first from the husband’s point of view and then from the wife’s. It was nominated for the National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award, and Barack Obama named it his favourite book of 2015. “Florida”, which draws on the wildlife, weather and landscape of her adopted state, won The Story Prize and was a National Book Award finalist. Granta named her one of its Best of Young American Novelists in 2017, and she received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2018.

“Matrix” imagines the life of Marie de France, sent to England at seventeen to become prioress of an impoverished abbey, and was shortlisted for the 2021 National Book Award. “The Vaster Wilds” (2023) follows a servant girl who flees a colonial settlement during the “starving time” of 1609. In 2024 Groff and her husband opened The Lynx, an independent bookshop in Gainesville, and Time magazine named her one of its 100 most influential people. Her third story collection, “Brawler”, was published on 24 February 2026.
