About N.K. Jemisin
N.K. Jemisin is an American science fiction and fantasy writer, born Nora Keita Jemisin in Iowa City, Iowa, on 19 September 1972. She is best known for the Broken Earth trilogy, which made her the first author to win the Hugo Award for Best Novel three years running, and for the Inheritance Trilogy and the Great Cities novels.
Jemisin grew up in New York City and Mobile, Alabama. She took a psychology degree at Tulane University and a Master of Education at the University of Maryland, then worked as a mental health and career counsellor. She attended the Viable Paradise writing workshop in 2002 and began publishing short stories, among them “Non-Zero Probabilities”, a Hugo and Nebula finalist.
Her debut novel, “The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms” (2010), won the Locus Award for Best First Novel and was a finalist for the Hugo, Nebula and World Fantasy awards. “The Broken Kingdoms” and “The Kingdom of Gods” completed the Inheritance Trilogy, and the two Dreamblood novels followed in 2012.
“The Fifth Season” (2015), the first Broken Earth book, won the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 2016, making Jemisin the first African-American writer to win in that category. “The Obelisk Gate” and “The Stone Sky” won in 2017 and 2018, so that every volume of the trilogy took the prize, and “The Stone Sky” also won the Nebula and Locus awards. In 2016 a Patreon campaign allowed her to give up counselling and write full time. TriStar Pictures acquired the screen rights to the trilogy in 2021, with Jemisin adapting it herself.
Her story collection “How Long ’til Black Future Month?” appeared in 2018. The novelette “Emergency Skin” won her a fourth Hugo in 2020 and the comic “Far Sector”, drawn by Jamal Campbell, a fifth in 2022. The urban fantasy “The City We Became” (2020) won the BSFA and Locus awards, and its sequel “The World We Make” followed in 2022. Jemisin received a MacArthur Fellowship in 2020, and the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association has since named her a Damon Knight Memorial Grand Master. She lives in Brooklyn.
