About Stephen Graham Jones
Stephen Graham Jones (born 1972) is an American horror writer and a member of the Blackfeet Tribe, known for “The Only Good Indians” (2020), the Indian Lake Trilogy that opens with “My Heart Is a Chainsaw” (2021), and “The Buffalo Hunter Hunter” (2025). He is the Ivena Baldwin Professor of English at the University of Colorado Boulder.
Jones was born in Midland, Texas, on 22 January 1972. He took a BA in English and philosophy at Texas Tech University in 1994, an MA at the University of North Texas in 1996 and a PhD at Florida State University in 1998. His debut novel, “The Fast Red Road” (2000), was written as his doctoral dissertation after he pitched the unwritten book to an editor at a writers’ conference. A National Endowment for the Arts fellowship followed in 2002, and his story collection “Bleed into Me” won the Texas Institute of Letters fiction award. He has taught at Boulder since 2008.
His early books moved between experimental fiction, crime and horror. “Mongrels” (2016) was a finalist for the Bram Stoker and Shirley Jackson awards, and the novella “Mapping the Interior” (2017) won the Bram Stoker Award for long fiction. “The Only Good Indians” follows four Blackfeet men hunted by the spirit of an elk they killed ten years earlier; Jones drew on the annual Blackfeet elk hunt he attends in Montana. It won the Ray Bradbury Prize along with Bram Stoker and Shirley Jackson awards.
The Indian Lake Trilogy (“My Heart Is a Chainsaw”, “Don’t Fear the Reaper” and “The Angel of Indian Lake”) plays with the conventions of slasher films, and its first volume won the Bram Stoker Award for best novel and the Locus Award for horror. “I Was a Teenage Slasher” followed in 2024.
“The Buffalo Hunter Hunter” is a vampire novel in which a professor finds a manuscript left by her ancestor recording the story of Good Stab, a Blackfeet man. It won the Bram Stoker, Locus and Nebula awards. Jones also writes comics, including the time-travel series “Earthdivers” for IDW. “Off the Reservation”, which returns to the setting of “The Only Good Indians” five years on, is published by Saga Press on 13 October 2026, and a haunted house novella, “Ears”, is scheduled for 9 March 2027.
