V. C. Andrews (1923 to 1986) was an American novelist, best known for “Flowers in the Attic” (1979), the first of the Dollanganger books. Her novels combine Gothic horror with family saga. She published seven in her lifetime, and since her death new books have continued to appear under her name, written by the ghostwriter Andrew Neiderman.
Cleo Virginia Andrews was born in Portsmouth, Virginia, on 6 June 1923. As a teenager she fell on a school staircase, and the surgery that followed left her with severe arthritis, so that she used crutches and a wheelchair for much of her life. She completed a four-year correspondence course in art and worked as a commercial artist, illustrator and portrait painter, supporting her family after her father died in 1957.
She turned to writing later in life. Her first novel, the science fiction story “Gods of Green Mountain”, was written in 1972 and only released as an ebook in 2004. “Flowers in the Attic”, about four children hidden in the attic of their grandmother’s mansion by their mother, was published in 1979 and reached the top of the bestseller lists within two weeks. She followed it with “Petals on the Wind” (1980), “If There Be Thorns” (1981) and “Seeds of Yesterday” (1984), the separate novel “My Sweet Audrina” (1982), and the first two Casteel novels, “Heaven” (1985) and “Dark Angel” (1986). Andrews died of breast cancer in Virginia Beach on 19 December 1986.
After her death her family hired Andrew Neiderman, a novelist whose own books include “The Devil’s Advocate”, to finish the manuscripts she had started. He completed “Garden of Shadows” (1987), a prequel to the Dollanganger books, and “Fallen Hearts” (1988). Everything published under the V. C. Andrews name since then is his work, under licence from her estate. It includes the rest of the Casteel series, the Cutler, Landry, Logan and Hudson family sagas, and many shorter series, as well as later returns to Foxworth Hall in the Christopher’s Diary and Attic books. In 2022 Neiderman also published a biography, “The Woman Beyond the Attic”.
“Flowers in the Attic” was filmed for the cinema in 1987. Since 2014 the Lifetime channel has adapted the Dollanganger, Casteel, Landry and Cutler series and “My Sweet Audrina” for television. The most recent titles are the three Sutherland novels (2023 to 2024) and the standalone “Birdlane Island” (2025).
