About Alan Dean Foster

Alan Dean Foster (born 18 November 1946 in New York City) is an American science fiction and fantasy writer whose published work runs to more than 120 books. He is known for the Humanx Commonwealth novels, which include the Pip and Flinx adventures, for the Spellsinger fantasy series, and for film novelisations such as “Alien” and the original “Star Wars”.

Foster was raised in Los Angeles and took a bachelor’s degree in political science and a Master of Fine Arts in cinema at UCLA, then spent two years as a copywriter for a small advertising and public relations firm in Studio City. His writing career began when August Derleth bought a long Lovecraftian letter of his in 1968 and published it as a short story in The Arkham Collector. His first novel, “The Tar-Aiym Krang”, was bought by Betty Ballantine and published by Ballantine Books in 1972.

That book opened the Humanx Commonwealth, an interstellar union named after its two leading species, the humans of Earth and the insect-like thranx. The central sequence follows Flinx, an orphan with empathic powers, and his alien pet Pip through fifteen novels, the most recent being “Strange Music” (2017). The same setting holds the Icerigger trilogy, the three Founding of the Commonwealth books and standalone novels such as “Midworld” and “Cachalot”. The eight Spellsinger novels (1983 to 1994) are fantasy: a young man known as Jon-Tom is pulled by a turtle wizard into a world of talking, human-sized animals.

Foster ghostwrote the novelisation of “Star Wars”, credited to George Lucas, and followed it with “Splinter of the Mind’s Eye” (1978), a novel written so that it could be filmed as a low-budget sequel. He novelised the first three Alien films, returned to Star Wars with “The Force Awakens” (2015), adapted the animated Star Trek series in ten “Star Trek Log” books and has the story credit on “Star Trek: The Motion Picture”.

His awards include the Galaxy Award in 1979 for “Splinter of the Mind’s Eye”, the Southwest Book Award for Fiction in 1990 for “Cyber Way” and the Grandmaster Award of the International Association of Media Tie-In Writers in 2008. He lives in Prescott, Arizona, with his wife JoAnn. Recent novels include “Prodigals” (2022) and “Stuart” (2024), and Blackstone Publishing lists “Lost on Paradise” for 20 October 2026.
