About Anne McCaffrey
Anne McCaffrey (1926 to 2011) was an American-born science fiction writer, resident in Ireland from 1970, who is best known for the Dragonriders of Pern series. She was the first woman to win a Hugo Award for fiction and the first to win a Nebula Award, both for the novellas that became her 1968 novel “Dragonflight”.
McCaffrey was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and studied Slavonic languages and literature at Radcliffe College from 1944 to 1947. She married Horace Wright Johnson in 1950 and they had three children. Two of her short stories were published in the 1950s, and she became a full-time writer after the family moved to Sea Cliff, Long Island, in 1965. Her first novel, “Restoree”, appeared in 1967, and “The Ship Who Sang” followed in 1969. She emigrated to Ireland with her two younger children in 1970.
The first Pern story, “Weyr Search”, was published in Analog in 1967 and won the 1968 Hugo for best novella; its successor, “Dragonrider”, won the 1969 Nebula. Pern is a planet settled by human colonists whose descendants live under the threat of Thread, a spore that falls from the sky and consumes organic matter. They fight it from the backs of genetically engineered, fire-breathing dragons, each bonded telepathically to its rider. McCaffrey regarded the books as science fiction. “The White Dragon” (1978) was among the first science fiction novels to reach the New York Times bestseller list.
The Harper Hall trilogy, which begins with “Dragonsong” (1976), was written for the young adult market. Her other series include the Crystal Singer trilogy, the Talent and Tower and Hive books, and the Freedom novels. From the 1990s she often wrote with co-authors, among them Elizabeth Ann Scarborough on the Petaybee and Acorna books, Jody Lynn Nye, Mercedes Lackey and Elizabeth Moon.
The American Library Association gave her its Margaret A. Edwards Award in 1999. She was named a Grand Master by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America in 2005 and was inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame in 2006.
From 2003 her son Todd McCaffrey wrote Pern novels, some with her and some alone, beginning with “Dragon’s Kin”. McCaffrey died at her home in County Wicklow on 21 November 2011, aged 85. “Sky Dragons”, written with Todd, was published in 2012, and her daughter Gigi McCaffrey added “Dragon’s Code” in 2018.
