About Eoin Colfer
Eoin Colfer is an Irish author of children’s books, best known for the “Artemis Fowl” series of fantasy novels about a young criminal mastermind who takes on a hidden world of fairies. The series has sold more than 25 million copies in 40 languages, and Colfer served as Laureate na nÓg, Ireland’s Children’s Laureate, from 2014 to 2016.
Colfer was born in Wexford, on the south-east coast of Ireland, in 1965, and grew up there with four brothers. His father was a primary school teacher and historian and his mother a drama teacher. After taking a degree in Dublin he became a primary school teacher himself, and between 1992 and 1996 he and his wife worked in Saudi Arabia, Tunisia and Italy. His first book, “Benny and Omar” (1998), drew on his time in Tunisia, and a sequel followed in 1999.
“Artemis Fowl” was published in 2001 and became a New York Times bestseller, after which Colfer left teaching to write full time. The series ran to eight novels, ending with “Artemis Fowl and the Last Guardian” in 2012. A spin-off trilogy, “The Fowl Twins”, began in 2019 and follows Artemis’s younger brothers Myles and Beckett. Readers voted “Artemis Fowl” their favourite Puffin title in a 2010 poll. A film adaptation directed by Kenneth Branagh was released on Disney+ in June 2020.
His other books for young readers include “The Wish List”, “The Supernaturalist”, “Airman”, the time-travel series “W.A.R.P.” and “Half Moon Investigations”, which was adapted as a BBC television series. For adults he has written two crime novels about the Irish bouncer Daniel McEvoy and the fantasy “Highfire” (2020), about a vodka-drinking dragon living in the Louisiana bayou. The estate of Douglas Adams asked him to write a sixth “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” novel, published in 2009 as “And Another Thing...”.
Colfer has also worked on picture books and graphic novels. “Imaginary Fred” was made with Oliver Jeffers, and “The Dog Who Lost His Bark” and “Three Tasks for a Dragon” with P. J. Lynch. With Andrew Donkin and the artist Giovanni Rigano he adapted the Artemis Fowl books as graphic novels and created “Illegal”, “Global” and “War” (2026), the last about a teenage graffiti artist whose city is invaded. Other recent books are “Juniper’s Christmas” (2023), its sequel “Firefox Moon” (2025) and “Deerheart” (2026), an Irish fable illustrated by Lynch.
