About Joyce Carol Oates
Joyce Carol Oates (born 16 June 1938) is an American writer who has published nearly 60 novels since the 1960s, along with many volumes of short stories, novellas, plays, poetry and non-fiction. She won the National Book Award for “them” (1969), and four of her books have been finalists for the Pulitzer Prize.
Oates was born in Lockport, New York, and grew up on her parents’ farm in the farming community of Millersport. She was the first in her family to complete high school, won a scholarship to Syracuse University, where she graduated as valedictorian in 1960, and took an MA at the University of Wisconsin in 1961, the year she married Raymond J. Smith. She taught at the University of Detroit from 1962 and at the University of Windsor in Ontario from 1968, then at Princeton University from 1978 until 2014.
Vanguard Press published her first book, the story collection “By the North Gate”, in 1963, and her first novel, “With Shuddering Fall”, in 1964. The four novels of the Wonderland Quartet (1967 to 1971) were all National Book Award finalists, and the third, “them”, set in Detroit from the 1930s to the 1960s, won the prize in 1970. Her 1966 story “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” was filmed in 1985 as “Smooth Talk”.
In 1980 “Bellefleur” opened the Gothic Saga, a series that now runs to five novels, the latest being “The Accursed” (2013). Oates also wrote suspense novels under the pen names Rosamond Smith and Lauren Kelly. “We Were the Mulvaneys” (1996), about the disintegration of an American family, became a bestseller after Oprah’s Book Club selected it in 2001 and was made into a television film. Several of her books fictionalise real events: “Black Water” draws on the Chappaquiddick incident, “Zombie” on the crimes of Jeffrey Dahmer, and “Blonde” (2000) on the life of Marilyn Monroe.
Her honours include two O. Henry Awards, the Bram Stoker Award for “Zombie”, the Prix Femina Etranger for “The Falls”, the National Humanities Medal (2010) and the Jerusalem Prize (2019). Raymond Smith died in 2008, and her memoir “A Widow’s Story” was published in 2011.
Oates’s most recent novels are “Butcher” (2024) and “Fox” (2025). A new story collection, “The Frenzy”, was published in June 2026.
