About Laura Ingalls Wilder
Laura Ingalls Wilder (1867 to 1957) was an American writer, teacher and journalist. She is best known for the Little House series of children’s novels, published between 1932 and 1943 and based on her childhood in a settler and pioneer family in the American Midwest.
She was born on 7 February 1867 near Pepin, Wisconsin, the second of five children of Charles and Caroline Ingalls. The family moved repeatedly, living in Kansas and Minnesota before settling in De Smet, South Dakota. She took her first teaching post in December 1882, two months before her sixteenth birthday, and married Almanzo Wilder on 25 August 1885. Their daughter Rose was born in 1886. In 1894 the Wilders moved to Mansfield, Missouri, where they built up Rocky Ridge Farm.
From 1911 until the mid-1920s Wilder was a columnist and editor for the “Missouri Ruralist”. After the stock market crash of 1929 wiped out the family’s savings, she wrote an autobiography called “Pioneer Girl”, which publishers rejected. At the urging of her daughter, the writer Rose Wilder Lane, she reworked the material for children, and Harper & Brothers published “Little House in the Big Woods” in 1932.
Seven more books followed, ending with “These Happy Golden Years” in 1943. “Farmer Boy” tells the story of Almanzo’s childhood in New York, and “The Long Winter” describes the severe winter of 1880 to 1881 in the Dakotas. Five of the books were Newbery Honor Books, and around 60 million copies of the series have been sold. Lane edited the books, and how far her influence went is still disputed.
In 1954 the American Library Association created a lifetime achievement award named after Wilder and made her its first recipient; it was renamed the Children’s Literature Legacy Award in 2018. Wilder died at home in Mansfield on 10 February 1957, aged 90. “The First Four Years”, a first draft about the early years of her marriage, was published in 1971 and is usually counted as the ninth Little House book, and “Pioneer Girl: The Annotated Autobiography” appeared in 2014. The NBC television series “Little House on the Prairie”, with Melissa Gilbert as Laura, ran from 1974 to 1983, and a new Netflix series premiered on 9 July 2026.
