About Raymond E. Feist
Raymond E. Feist is an American fantasy author, born in Los Angeles in 1945, who is best known for the Riftwar Cycle, a sequence of thirty novels that began with “Magician” in 1982 and ended with “Magician’s End” in 2013. His books have been translated into multiple languages and have sold more than 15 million copies.
He was born Raymond Elias Gonzales III and took the surname of his adoptive stepfather, Felix E. Feist, when his mother remarried. He grew up in Southern California and graduated from the University of California, San Diego in 1977 with a BA in Communication Arts. While he was a student there, he and a group of friends built the world of Midkemia as the setting for their own role-playing game, an alternative to Dungeons & Dragons. That same year he had the idea for a novel about a boy who becomes a magician. He wrote it two years later and Doubleday published it in 1982.
“Magician” introduced Pug, an orphaned apprentice caught up in a war between Midkemia and the Tsurani of Kelewan, who invade through rifts connecting the two worlds. The Riftwar Cycle follows that conflict and its consequences across ten series, among them the Serpentwar Saga, Conclave of Shadows and the Darkwar Saga. The Empire Trilogy, written with Janny Wurts, is set on Kelewan and runs alongside the first books. “Krondor: The Betrayal” and “Krondor: Tear of the Gods” are novelisations of the computer games “Betrayal at Krondor” and “Return to Krondor”.
His one novel fully outside that universe is “Faerie Tale” (1988), a dark fantasy set in modern New York State. He received an Inkpot Award in 1988. In February 2022 the production company Six Studios announced that it was developing the first six Riftwar books as a television series.
After the Riftwar Cycle he wrote the Firemane Saga, a trilogy published between 2018 and 2022 and set on a new world, Garn. “A Darkness Returns” (2024) opened the Dragonwar Saga, which brings the Firemane characters to Midkemia and returns to Pug in a reincarnated form. In April 2026 his official site reported that he was writing his next book under the working title “A Light Between the Heavens”. He lives in San Diego.
