About Robert Jordan
Robert Jordan was the pen name of James Oliver Rigney Jr. (1948 to 2007), an American author of epic fantasy. He is best known for “The Wheel of Time”, a series of 14 novels and a prequel that has sold around 90 million copies, and he also wrote seven Conan the Barbarian novels in the early 1980s.
Jordan was born in Charleston, South Carolina, on 17 October 1948. He spent a year at Clemson University before enlisting in the US Army, and served two tours in Vietnam as a helicopter gunner between 1968 and 1970, for which he received the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Bronze Star. He then studied physics at The Citadel, graduated in 1974 and worked for the US Navy as a nuclear engineer. He began writing in 1977 during a long hospital stay that followed a knee injury and a blood clot.
His first published novel was “The Fallon Blood” (1980), a historical novel issued under the name Reagan O’Neal by Popham Press, the imprint of his editor Harriet McDougal, whom he married in 1981. Two Fallon sequels followed, along with a western, “Cheyenne Raiders”, as Jackson O’Reilly. When Tom Doherty at Tor Books needed a Conan novel quickly, McDougal recommended Jordan, and he wrote seven between 1982 and 1984, including the novelisation of the film “Conan the Destroyer”.
Work on “The Wheel of Time” began in 1984. It was planned as a trilogy, and the first volume, “The Eye of the World”, appeared in 1990. The books are set in a world where the Aes Sedai, an order of women who can channel the One Power, search for the Dragon Reborn, a figure prophesied either to save the world from the Dark One or to break it again. The eighth to fourteenth books each reached number one on the New York Times bestseller list.
Jordan announced in 2006 that he had cardiac amyloidosis, and he died on 16 September 2007, leaving notes for the ending. Brandon Sanderson completed the story in three volumes, finishing with “A Memory of Light” in 2013, and the series was nominated for the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 2014. A television adaptation led by Rosamund Pike ran for three seasons on Amazon Prime Video from 2021 to 2025. “Warrior of the Altaii”, the novel Jordan wrote first in the late 1970s, was published in 2019.
