Robert Ludlum (1927 to 2001) was an American thriller writer, best known as the creator of Jason Bourne. He wrote 27 novels, beginning with “The Scarlatti Inheritance” in 1971, and his books have been published in 33 languages and 40 countries.
Ludlum was born in New York City on 25 May 1927 and educated at the Rectory School, Cheshire Academy and Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, where he took a BA in drama in 1951. He served in the United States Marines and then worked in the theatre as an actor and producer. From 1960 to 1970 he managed and produced shows at the Playhouse on the Mall in Paramus, New Jersey, and he later said that he thought of suspense and good theatre in much the same way.
His novels usually set one man, or a small group, against powerful conspiracies involving global corporations, shadowy military forces and government organisations. Two early books, “Trevayne” and “The Cry of the Halidon”, first appeared under the pen name Jonathan Ryder, and “The Road to Gandolfo” under the name Michael Shepherd. “The Bourne Identity” (1980) introduced Jason Bourne, a man with amnesia who has to work out who he is while a professional assassin, the CIA and several shadowy groups try to kill him. Ludlum continued the story in “The Bourne Supremacy” (1986) and “The Bourne Ultimatum” (1990).
Several of the novels have been filmed. Sam Peckinpah directed “The Osterman Weekend” in 1983, Michael Caine starred in “The Holcroft Covenant” in 1985, and Richard Chamberlain played Bourne in a 1988 television miniseries. The Bourne films starring Matt Damon began in 2002, and “The Bourne Ultimatum” won three Academy Awards.
Ludlum died of a heart attack at his home in Naples, Florida, on 12 March 2001. Further novels were published after his death, the last of them “The Bancroft Strategy” in 2006. He also created the Covert-One series, about a secret United States agency, and oversaw its first three books, written with Gayle Lynds and Philip Shelby. His estate has gone on publishing novels under the “Robert Ludlum’s” banner. Eric Van Lustbader wrote eleven Bourne novels between 2004 and 2017, and Brian Freeman has written the series since 2020, most recently “The Bourne Revenge” (January 2026). The estate has also published Joshua Hood’s Treadstone novels and Simon Gervais’s “The Blackbriar Genesis”.
