About Terry Brooks

Terry Brooks (born 8 January 1944) is an American fantasy writer best known for the Shannara series, which began with “The Sword of Shannara” in 1977 and now runs to more than 30 novels. He has also written the Magic Kingdom of Landover and Viridian Deep series and the novelisation of “Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace”.

Brooks was born in Sterling, Illinois. He studied English literature at Hamilton College, graduating in 1966, and took a law degree at Washington and Lee University, then practised as an attorney before turning to writing full time. He had written since high school, and reading “The Lord of the Rings” at college settled him on fantasy, though he credits William Faulkner as the influence on his style. “The Sword of Shannara” took him seven years to finish; according to his own site it was the first work of fiction to appear on the New York Times trade paperback bestseller list, where it stayed for more than five months.

The Shannara books are set in the Four Lands, which the series identifies as Earth long after civilisation was destroyed in the Great Wars. “The Elfstones of Shannara” (1982) and “The Wishsong of Shannara” (1985) completed the original trilogy, and later sets such as The Heritage of Shannara and The Voyage of the Jerle Shannara carried the story on to “The Last Druid” (2020). The Word and Void trilogy, which opens with “Running with the Demon” (1997), was tied to Shannara by the Genesis of Shannara books, beginning with “Armageddon’s Children” (2006).

His other main series, the Magic Kingdom of Landover, follows Ben Holiday, a former trial lawyer who buys a magical kingdom; it started in 1986 and has six novels. Brooks also wrote the novelisation of the film “Hook” (1991), the memoir and writing guide “Sometimes the Magic Works” (2003) and the science fiction novel “Street Freaks” (2018).

“The Shannara Chronicles”, a television adaptation that starts from “The Elfstones of Shannara”, premiered on MTV in January 2016 and ran for two seasons. Brooks received the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement in 2017. In March 2025 he announced his semi-retirement and that Delilah S. Dawson would continue the Shannara books. The First Druids of Shannara began with “Galaphile” (2025), and “Brona”, written with Dawson, was published on 25 August 2026. He lives in the Pacific Northwest with his wife, Judine.
