Terry Deary is a British author best known for “Horrible Histories”, the children’s history series he began in 1993 with the illustrator Martin Brown. Born in Sunderland in 1946, he says on his own website that he has written 362 books, which have sold more than 38 million copies in 45 languages.
Deary’s father was a butcher in Hendon, Sunderland, and his mother managed a clothing shop. He worked in the family shop as a boy, joined the electricity board as a management trainee at 18, and became a professional actor in 1972 with Theatre Powys in mid Wales, touring village halls with theatre for children. He later qualified as a teacher and taught drama. He began writing in 1976 and went full time in 1994.
“Terrible Tudors”, written with Neil Tonge, opened the “Horrible Histories” series in 1993, and “Rotten Romans”, “Vicious Vikings” and “Vile Victorians” followed in 1994. Published by Scholastic, the books cover civilisations, nations and periods of history with humorous pictures and plenty of gruesome detail. The series has since grown to include specials, handbooks, city guides and the “Gory Stories” spin-offs.
An animated version was shown on CITV, and a live-action sketch show of the same name has run on CBBC since 2009, with Deary making occasional appearances. In 2012 he was the tenth most-borrowed author in British libraries. The University of Sunderland awarded him an honorary doctorate of education in 2000.
Alongside the non-fiction he has written a large body of historical fiction for children. It includes the “Tudor Chronicles” novels, short series grouped by period such as “Tudor Tales”, “Roman Tales” and “Viking Tales”, and “The Fire Thief” trilogy, which opens with a 2005 novel about Prometheus, the Titan who stole fire from the gods.
Since 2024 he has also written for adults. “A History of Britain in Ten Enemies” was published in October 2024 and its paperback reached number one on the Sunday Times list in May 2025; “Revolting” followed in September 2025. His first murder mystery, “Actually, I’m a Murderer”, appeared in 2025, with the sequel “Actually, I’m a Corpse” in June 2026 and “A History of the World in Ten Wars” in October 2026. He lives in County Durham and is a road runner who has completed the Great North Run 25 times.
