About V.E. Schwab
V.E. Schwab is an American fantasy author, born Victoria Elizabeth Schwab in California on 7 July 1987 and raised in Nashville, Tennessee. She is best known for the Shades of Magic series, the Villains novels that began with “Vicious”, and “The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue”. Her books for children and teenagers appear under the name Victoria Schwab.
Schwab has a British mother and an American father. She studied at Washington University in St. Louis, graduating in 2009, and later took a master’s degree at the University of Edinburgh on depictions of monstrosity in medieval art. She sold her debut, “The Near Witch”, to Disney before she graduated. It was published in 2011, went out of print within two years and was reissued by Titan Books in 2019.
Her first adult novel, “Vicious” (2013), was described by the Guardian as an exploration of the superhero mythos and a revenge thriller, and topped the fantasy category of the American Library Association’s 2014 Reading List. Its sequel “Vengeful” won the Goodreads Choice Award for science fiction in 2018. “A Darker Shade of Magic” (2015), which follows a character named Kell and involves travel between dimensions, opened the Shades of Magic trilogy. “The Fragile Threads of Power” (2023) began a second series, Threads of Power, set in the same world.
“The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue” was published by Tor in October 2020, was a finalist for the Locus Award for Best Fantasy Novel and has sold over two million copies in the United States. A film version is in development with Augustine Frizzell directing. Schwab also created the Netflix series “First Kill” (2022), based on her own short story, which was cancelled after one season.
As Victoria Schwab she has written the Dark Vault, Monsters of Verity and Cassidy Blake books. “Gallant” won the 2022 Goodreads Choice Award for young adult fantasy, and the vampire novel “Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil” (2025) topped the New York Times and USA Today bestseller lists. In 2026 she published “The Ending Writes Itself”, a mystery written with Cat Clarke under the joint pseudonym Evelyn Clarke, and “Victorious”, the final Villains novel. She divides her time between Denver and Edinburgh and hosts the podcast “No Write Way”.
