About Dave Eggers
Dave Eggers (born 12 March 1970 in Boston) is an American writer, editor and publisher whose books include the memoir “A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius”, the novels “What Is the What” and “The Circle”, and the Newbery Medal winner “The Eyes and the Impossible”. He founded the independent publisher McSweeney’s and co-founded the youth writing centre 826 Valencia.
Eggers grew up in Lake Forest, Illinois, and studied journalism at the University of Illinois. When he was 21 both of his parents died of cancer within 32 days of each other, and he became guardian of his younger brother Christopher, known as Toph, moving with him to the San Francisco Bay Area. There he started the magazine Might with friends in 1994. He told the story of those years in his memoir, published in 2000, which became a bestseller and a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction.
His first novel, “You Shall Know Our Velocity”, followed in 2002. “What Is the What” (2006) is a fictionalised account of the life of Valentino Achak Deng, a refugee from the civil war in South Sudan, and was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award. He returned to non-fiction with “Zeitoun” (2009) and “The Monk of Mokha” (2018). “A Hologram for the King” (2012), a National Book Award finalist, was filmed in 2016 with Tom Hanks.
“The Circle” (2013) follows a young employee at a powerful San Francisco technology company and was filmed in 2017 with Emma Watson and Tom Hanks. Its follow-up, “The Every”, came out in 2021, and Eggers initially kept the hardcover out of Amazon and sold it through independent bookshops. Since 2021 McSweeney’s has also published The Forgetters, a run of short standalone books beginning with “The Museum of Rain” that he intends to gather into a larger novel.
He writes for children as well. “The Eyes and the Impossible” (2023), illustrated by Shawn Harris, won the 2024 Newbery Medal, and a follow-up, “The Avalanche Kingdom”, is scheduled for February 2027. His latest novel for adults, “Contrapposto”, about art and a 60-year friendship, was published in June 2026. Eggers lives in the Bay Area with his wife, the writer Vendela Vida, with whom he wrote the screenplay for “Away We Go” (2009).
