About Gregory Maguire

Gregory Maguire (born 9 June 1954 in Albany, New York) is an American novelist best known for “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West”, the 1995 novel behind the Broadway musical and the two-part film. He has written several dozen books for adults and children, and many of his adult novels are inspired by classic children’s stories.

Maguire was the youngest of four children. His mother died from complications of his birth, and he spent part of his infancy in a local orphanage before he was reclaimed at the age of two, after his father remarried. He was educated in Catholic schools, took a BA in English at the State University of New York at Albany in 1976, an MA in children’s literature at Simmons College in 1978 and a PhD at Tufts University in 1990. His first novel, “The Lightning Time”, appeared in 1978, when he was 24. He taught at the Simmons College Center for the Study of Children’s Literature from 1979 to 1986, and in 1987 co-founded the charity Children’s Literature New England, which he co-directed for 25 years.

“Wicked” was his first novel for adults. Written as a biography of the Wicked Witch of the West, whom Maguire names Elphaba Thropp, it presents a darker Land of Oz than L. Frank Baum’s. It sold by word of mouth, reaching 500,000 copies by the time the musical, with songs by Stephen Schwartz, opened on Broadway in 2003. The film versions followed in 2024 and 2025. Three sequels, “Son of a Witch”, “A Lion Among Men” and “Out of Oz”, complete The Wicked Years.

He has since returned to Oz with the Another Day trilogy, which begins with “The Brides of Maracoor” (2021), and with two childhood prequels: “Elphie” (2025) and “Galinda”, published by HarperCollins in September 2026. A two-part graphic novel adaptation of “Wicked”, illustrated by Scott Hampton, appeared in 2025 and 2026.

His other adult novels include “Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister” (1999), which retells Cinderella from a stepsister’s point of view and became a television film in 2002, “Mirror Mirror”, “After Alice” and “Hiddensee: A Tale of the Once and Future Nutcracker”. For children he wrote the seven Hamlet Chronicles, starting with “Seven Spiders Spinning”. Maguire lives in Concord, Massachusetts, with his husband, the painter Andy Newman, and they have three adopted children.
