About Matt Haig
Matt Haig is an English author, born in Sheffield on 3 July 1975, who writes fiction and non-fiction for both adults and children. He is best known for the novel “The Midnight Library” (2020) and for “Reasons to Stay Alive” (2015), a memoir of depression and anxiety.
Haig grew up in Newark in Nottinghamshire and studied English and History at the University of Hull. At 24 he had a breakdown, an experience that informs much of his non-fiction. His first books were business titles for Kogan Page, starting in 2002. His first novel, “The Last Family in England” (2004), retells Shakespeare’s “Henry IV, Part 1” with dogs as the main characters, and “The Dead Fathers Club” (2006) reworks “Hamlet” through an eleven-year-old boy visited by his father’s ghost.
“The Radleys” (2010), a vampire novel, received an Alex Award from the American Library Association and was filmed with Damian Lewis for release in 2024. In “The Humans” (2013) an alien takes on the identity of a university mathematician, and “How to Stop Time” (2017) follows a man who looks about 40 but has been alive for more than 400 years.
In “The Midnight Library” a woman called Nora Seed finds herself in a library between life and death, where each book holds a version of the life she might have lived. It was shortlisted for Fiction Book of the Year at the 2021 British Book Awards and adapted for BBC Radio 4. “The Life Impossible” (2024) sends a recently widowed woman to a house she has inherited in Ibiza. “The Midnight Train”, a companion to “The Midnight Library” about an 81-year-old bookshop owner revisiting the important events of his life, was published in May 2026, and a graphic novel of “The Midnight Library” adapted by Fred Fordham followed in October.
For children, Haig wrote “Shadow Forest”, which won the Nestlé Children’s Book Prize in 2007, and “A Boy Called Christmas” (2015), illustrated by Chris Mould, which became a film in 2021. “Reasons to Stay Alive” was a number one Sunday Times bestseller and stayed in the UK top ten for 46 weeks. He lives in Brighton.
