About Patrick Rothfuss
Patrick Rothfuss is an American fantasy author, born in Madison, Wisconsin, on 6 June 1973. He is best known for “The Kingkiller Chronicle”, a planned trilogy that began with his debut novel “The Name of the Wind” (2007) and continued with “The Wise Man’s Fear” (2011).
Rothfuss graduated from DeForest Area High School and took a BA in English at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in 1999, where he wrote for the campus paper and later taught part time. He completed a master’s degree at Washington State University in 2002. In the same year he won a Writers of the Future contest with “The Road to Levenshir”, an excerpt from what would become “The Wise Man’s Fear”. He had begun writing the series in 1994.
DAW Books bought “The Name of the Wind” in 2006 and published it the following year. It won the Quill Award for science fiction, fantasy and horror, was named among the Publishers Weekly Books of the Year, and received an Alex Award in 2008. “The Wise Man’s Fear” followed in March 2011 and reached number one on the New York Times hardback fiction list. Rothfuss won the David Gemmell Legend Award in 2012.
The series tells the life story of Kvothe, once a travelling player and musician who became a notorious arcanist, and who now keeps a rural inn under an assumed name. He recounts his past to a scribe over three days, with one day to each book, while interludes return to the inn in the present. The third volume, “The Doors of Stone”, has not been published and has no release date.
Two novellas illustrated by Nate Taylor sit alongside the novels. “The Slow Regard of Silent Things” (2014) follows the character Auri, and “The Narrow Road Between Desires” (2023) is an expanded version of “The Lightning Tree”, a story about Bast first published in the anthology “Rogues”. Rothfuss and Taylor also made two Princess and Mr. Whiffle books, described as a dark twist on the classic children’s picture book, and Rothfuss co-wrote the comic series “Rick and Morty vs. Dungeons & Dragons” with Jim Zub. In 2008 he founded the charity Worldbuilders, which has raised more than 11.5 million dollars, mostly for Heifer International.
