About Sophie Kinsella

Sophie Kinsella was the pen name of Madeleine Wickham (born 12 December 1969, died 10 December 2025), the English author of the Shopaholic novels about Becky Bloomwood, a financial journalist who cannot manage her own finances. By the time of her death her books had sold over 50 million copies in more than 60 countries.

She was born Madeleine Sophie Townley in Roehampton, London, the eldest of three daughters. At New College, Oxford, she began a Music degree and switched after a year to Philosophy, Politics and Economics, then worked as a financial journalist. She wrote her first novel, “The Tennis Party”, at the age of 24. It was published under her married name in 1995, and six more Madeleine Wickham novels followed by 2001.

The pen name combined her middle name with her mother’s maiden name, and she submitted the first Kinsella manuscript to her own publishers anonymously. “The Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic” came out in 2000 and was published in the United States as “Confessions of a Shopaholic”. The series ran to ten books, ending with “Christmas Shopaholic” in 2019. She only revealed that Kinsella and Wickham were the same writer when “Can You Keep a Secret?” was published in December 2003.

The first two Shopaholic books were the basis of the 2009 film “Confessions of a Shopaholic”, starring Isla Fisher, and “Can You Keep a Secret?” was filmed in 2019 with Alexandra Daddario. Alongside her standalone romantic comedies she wrote a young adult novel, “Finding Audrey” (2015), and the Mummy Fairy and Me books for younger children.

In 2024 Kinsella made public that she had been diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive brain cancer, in late 2022. Her last book, “What Does It Feel Like?” (2024), is a novel about a novelist with the same illness, and The New York Times chose it as one of its 100 Notable Books of the year. She was shortlisted for Author of the Year at the 2025 British Book Awards and died at her home in Dorset in December 2025.
