Lois Lowry Books In Order

Lois Lowry’s knack for weaving thought-provoking tales has made her a much loved figure in young adult literature. Born on March 20, 1937, in Hawaii, Lowry’s childhood was a mosaic of experiences shaped by her father’s military career, which took her family to various parts of the world.

This early exposure to different cultures and settings would later become a wellspring of inspiration for her writing.

After starting her college education at Brown University, Lowry’s path took a detour when she left school to marry and start a family. It wasn’t until her mid-thirties, as a single mother of four, that she returned to her academic pursuits at the University of Southern Maine, a decision that reignited her passion for storytelling.

Lowry’s journey into the world of children’s literature began with modest steps, but her ambition and talent quickly became apparent.

Her breakthrough came with “Number the Stars” (1989), a gripping tale set against the backdrop of the Holocaust, which earned her the prestigious Newbery Medal. But it was “The Giver” (1993), a novel that explores the dark side of utopian society, that solidified her reputation as a fearless and innovative writer. This book, too, won the Newbery Medal, making Lowry one of the few authors to receive this honor more than once.

Beyond these well-known works, Lowry’s bibliography is a testament to her versatility, covering everything from family dynamics to historical fiction, always with a keen eye on the emotional truths that unite us.

Her writing, characterized by its clarity, empathy, and willingness to tackle difficult subjects, has invited young readers to explore complex ideas and emotions, sparking important conversations about freedom, identity, and the human condition.

Now based in Maine, Lowry continues to write and engage with her readers, leaving a lasting impact on the landscape of young adult literature. Her work challenges us to look deeper at the world around us and within ourselves, proving that stories can indeed change how we see the world and our place in it.
